LOUISBURG — A Franklin County man who held police at bay for seven days before apparently shooting his girlfriend and himself has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
A judge ruled last month Douglas Carter is competent to stand trial. Police say Carter kidnapped his girlfriend Anitra Coburn from her Greenville home and then allegedly shot her to death during the standoff outside Louisburg.
His trial is scheduled to start in January.
