Explosion Kills Father; Burns Son

HENDERSONVILLE — An explosion at a Hendersonville building has killed a father and injuredhis son.

A worker in the building used gasoline to loosen the carpet, saidHenderson County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Randy Stepp.

``One of the witnesses heard the father say, `No, no, no.' Then theplace blew up,'' Stepp said.

Dewayne Robinson, 35, died at the scene while his son, Dalton, wasflownto N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem for treatment. He waslisted in critical condition today with burns over more than 50 percentof his body, said hospital supervisor Roberta Stutts.

The worker, Jorge Cevantes, and Robinson's 7-year-old daughter, Krystal,ran outside when the explosion occurred. Cervantes suffered aminor injury, but the girl did not appear to be injured, Stepp said.

Henderson County Fire Marshal Rocky Hyder said he found a plasticcontainer inside the building that may have contained gasoline.

``It looks like an explosion or a fast-burning fire,'' he said.

Wendell Capes, the owner of the building, said Robinson lived nearby andkept a check on the structure for him. Robinson was Capes'son-in-law.

Stepp said investigators were looking into whether the boy may haveignited the fumes.

``By the father saying, `No, no, no,' we feel like the boy was doingsomething,'' he said. .
