UNC Panel to Discuss Sexual Harassment Complaints Against Professor
Posted October 6, 1997
CHAPEL HILL — A UNC-Chapel Hill drama professor's job may be on the line. A university panel is scheduled to meet and discuss complaints against a professor accused of sexual harassment.
The complaints are filed against Professor David Hammond, a professor of drama at the Graham Memorial building at UNC.
Six students say he talked explicitly about sex, participated in classroom skits where kissing and touching were involved, and spoke roughly to them.
Anonymous complaints first surfaced in September of 1996. But, before the professor can receive punishment, the students must go on record with their names. They've done that, and now the university is relooking at the case.
David Hammond is currently on leave from the university. University officials are expected to comment later today.
