13-Year-Old Charged in Lee County Slaying

— A 13-year-old boy was arrested late Wednesday and charged with murder after a woman was found shot to death in her Lee County home, authorities said.

The body of Piedad Visoso, 33, was found at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in her mobile home at 63 Frances Louise Lane, located near the intersection of Lee Avenue and St. Andrews Church Road south of Sanford, authorities said. Visoso's boyfriend found her body when he returned home from work, authorities said.

Visoso was three months pregnant, and her 18-month-old daughter also was in the home at the time, authorities said. The toddler was unharmed, they said.

The 13-year-old boy was arrested a few hours later and charged with first-degree murder, authorities said.

"He was found close to the residence where he's actually supposed to live," Lee County Sheriff Tracy Carter said.

Carter described the boy as an acquaintance of Visoso who had lived off and on with her and her boyfriend and had been staying in the mobile home for several days.

"We don't really have a motive (for the shooting) at this time," Carter said, adding that investigators have recovered a handgun that they believe was used in the slaying.

It's too early to determine if the boy will be tried as an adult in the case, authorities said.

Neighbor Dorothy Thompson said she was shocked not only by Visoso's death, but also by the age of the suspect.

"That is just so horrible," Thompson said. "They were the quietest people."

well, th N&O reports that "Lee County sheriff's deputies charged the elementary school student with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 33-year-old woman he lived with"

Given that all three of my kids were 10 YEARS OLD WHEN THEY GRADUATED FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, someone should have known this boy had problems. Where are the schools and social services. Perhaps if he had been placed somewhere else, this woman and her unborn baby would still be alive.

I will reserve judgement until I know more about the situation. This is such a tragedy all around. A young mother has left an small child, but we have to keep in mind that this boy (and he IS a boy) is innocent until proven guilty. He could be as much a victim in all this as she was.

How many pregnant women, mothers, must die?

  • ladyblue Aug 3, 2007

This is so sad and I'll let things unfold and wait for more but I just had dinner with a friend with 13 y/o and I'd like to wait before I hear adult stuff. It depends on how he lived before this happened. I hope this family can find peace somewhere in all this mess.

ALthough I can appreciate the passion of the posts, can I just suggest that y'all need to take a step back? The kid was charged - that doesn't mean he did it. If he did it, we don't know why. We don't know anything about him. We don't really need to feel anything but sympathy right now for the family of the woman that was killed. We can reserve our anger for a time when the case has become more clear and all these questions are answered.

As I once poster, I blame the government and the system for most of these crimes, ever since parents have had their rights taken away about spanking and no prayer in school, society has gone downhill. Yes we are all to blame for letting this happen, We need to take back control and fight for what we beleive in and not let our children run wild and let others dictate how to handle them...

Why should his age matter ? She is just as dead as if he was 31 .A murderer is a murderer send his but to prison and put him in the general population .Stop cuddling these kids and make them responsible for their actions .Live by the sword die by the sword .Ps I dont care how bad his childhood was he KILLED a pregnant lady and now an 18 month old has no mother either .And you people wonder what is wrong with our county .

What a shame. I have a 13 year old son and I just can't imagine him not living at home and being in such a frame of mind that he could commit murder. My prayers to all... I pray that our society can get back to the basics, it works.

This young man (sorry this child) was let down some where in his life. There are things we will never know about this case. One thing I do know is how to pray for him and the lady's family . News like this is hard to understand. GOD BLESS all.
