Two Arrests Made in Murder of Wake County Woman
Posted September 10, 1997
RALEIGH — Two East Wake High School students have been charged with the murder of an elderly Wake County woman who lived near the school. Authorities said the motive for the killing of 79-year-old Isabelle Scarboro was robbery, although they say the students took nothing but Scarboro's car keys and driver's license.
Travis Roberts, 17, of Zebulon, and a 14-year-old Wendell girl have been arrested. The girl's name is being withheld because she is a juvenile. Roberts is on probation for arson.
Authorities said the two students broke in the back door of Scarboro's home. Students were suspected after someone found the woman's license on school grounds.
Major Danny Bellamy of the Wake County Sheriff's Department says the suspects had been on Scarboro's property before.
Wake County Sheriff John Baker says his department believes the teens entered the house with the intention of robbery.
Wake deputies believe the teenagers intended to take cash and Scarboro's car. The cause of Scarboro's death has not been released. Police say they are waiting for the results of an autopsy before releasing that information.
