Mitchell Sheriff Can Keep His Job
Posted September 5, 1997
TOWN NAME — The Mitchell County sheriff is going to be able to keep his job, but not without first getting a sharp lecture.
Sheriff Vernon Bishop was accused of abusing his authority by asking his deputies to tape record the private telephone conversation of a high school football coach whom he believed was homosexual.
The coach ended up quitting. Yesterday a judge refused to take the Sheriff's job away but did give him a good finger-wagging about respecting the law.
