Posted September 5, 1997
MIAMI — ``Erika'' is now a hurricane. Top sustained winds have hit 75 miles-per-hour, making it a minimal hurricane. And it could gain more strength in the next 24 hours.
Hurricane warnings are now up for the Leeward Islands from Antigua and Montserrat northwest through St. Martin.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for Guadeloupe and Dominica.
A hurricane watch is out for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The storm is about 250 miles east of Antigua, and moving west-northwest at 13 miles-per-hour. Copyright ©1997 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or distributed.
