Day Care Law Passes Final Senate Vote

RALEIGH — Your children may be safer if a new law passedby the state legislature Thursday does what it's intended to do. The law, designed to rate day care centers and calls for more training of daycare workers, passed its final vote in the Senate Thursday.

A lot of people who lobbied for this bill were concerned it mightnot pass this session but in the 11th hour, it did.

The law challenges day care centers to increase their standards. Ifthey fail to do so, they face a low rating which means they could losebusiness.

The governor believes this is the first step in providing better carefor the state's children.

In terms of training... all day care workers will have to earn an EarlyChildhood Credential within six months of their hiring dates. Continuingeducation for staff will focus on 9 areas including how to plan a safeenvironment and how to understand a child's growth and behavior.
