Former Christian-School Volunteer Pleads Guilty to Sex Charges

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former North Raleigh Christian Academy volunteer pleaded guilty Monday to six sex offenses involving young girls and dating back more than 10 years.

Donald Cameron, 65, will serve eight months in prison followed by five years of intensive probation during which he will wear a GPS bracelet to monitor his whereabouts. He will also be listed on the state's sex offender registry for a minimum of 10 years.

Wake County Assistant District Attorney Melanie Shekita said the deal prevents the victims from having to testify.

"I think this is the best we could have hoped for with the least amount of damage," Shekita said.

Cameron's plea deal stemmed from allegations by four victims who said they were molested in his yard – two incidents occurred in March and April 2006 and two incidents occurred more than 10 years ago – while they played.

A student at North Raleigh Christian Academy, where Cameron volunteered in the music library, and a student from another school also claimed Cameron molested them.

"It would have been much easier to kind of get our kids where they were out of danger, tell them not to go down there and move on with our lives," said Scott Wood, the father of one of the victims, who chose to go on the record with WRAL. "But that wouldn't have accomplished anything for future victims, and I have no doubt that there would be future victims."

Authorities have said Cameron might have been molesting girls for as many as 30 years.

The parents of his most recent victims said they did not suspect Cameron was anything but a friendly neighbor until another child in the neighborhood witnessed the girls' being touched and urged them to tell their parents.

"We really, really feel like it's going to be difficult for him to do this again," Wood said. "In the past, it's been quite easy. That's been accomplished. We feel pretty good about that."
