Woods Fire Destroys 10 Acres in Wilson County

WILSON — Firefighters are wrapping up things at the scene of a woods fire that came dangerously close to torching a church in Wilson County. Nearly 10 acres of land went up in flames Saturday night.
Firefighters say excessive heat and humidity made the job especially difficult, but they managed to contain it. The flames came within about 100 feet of the Benches Primitive Baptist Church, but never damaged the building.
Firefighters say debris left behind by Hurricane Fran made the fire burn hotter and faster than usual. The North Carolina Forest Service is on the scene plowing a line around the fire. Right now, they don't know what started the blaze.
