Raleigh Officer & Suspect Out of Hospital

RALEIGH — A Raleigh police officer and a suspected drunkdriver have both been released from the hospital, following a bizarreweekend arrest.

Witnesses said Officer D.C. McNeil was trying to arrest a suspecteddrunk driver on Whitaker Mill Road around 7 p.m. Saturday. The suspect,Paul "Chip" William Johnson Jr, 36, reportedly resisted arrest.

When Johnson refused to provide his license or take a sobriety test,McNeil called for backup. A second officer arrived, put his car into park and went to help McNeil. But his car rolled forward, hitting McNeil, who was shielding Johnson with his body.

The assisting officer, K.S. Newton, returned to his car and backed itaway from the men.

Johnson was injured not by the car, but from his struggle with theofficer.
