SHARPSBURG — Four weeks ago, Sharpsburg Police Chief Wayne Hathaway and Gloria Nicholson were shot to death. The people they left behind are doing their best tocarry on. While the past is still painful, the community is moving ahead.

It will be a while before things are back to normal, one resident said, because Hathaway was such a big part of the town for many years.

There are still plenty of reminders around Sharpsburg that it's a community in mourning. Sympathy cards line the town office wall along with blueribbons and a memorial created by a family for Hathaway.

The town is beginning to heal, putting the murders of the police chief andGloria Nicholson behind it and trying to get back to the routine of aquiet, friendly community.

That healing process will continue Monday night as town commissioners gather in a special meeting to pick the person who will fill Wayne Hathaway's shoes.

As they look ahead, people in Sharpsburg are looking to each other forsupport.

"But then he would want us to go on," said Jeanni Perry, Sharpsburgresident. "Keep his memory but still carry on what he wanted to do. Whathe loved to do so well."
