RALEIGH — Those who knew of him say the husband and father seemed to lead a normal life, but Tuesday, he was arrested for taking indecent liberties with a minornear a North Raleigh swimming pool.
Parents in the Greystone subdivision say the are relieved that the suspect has been taken into custody. Police were able to arrest 35-year-old Guy Mashburn, at least in part, because of a flyer showing a composite of the suspect. Several people recognized the man in the drawing and called police.
Mashburn was taken into custody late Tuesday afternoon. Police say he lured a 7-year-old girl into a gazebo near the pool and molested her last Friday. Mashburn is charged with first-degree sexual offense, kidnapping, and taking indecent liberties with a minor.
Even though he's under arrest, parents in the Greystone neighborhood say they're not taking any chances with their children. Parents Kay and Jerry Letterman say things are different in their house and in the neighborhood.
The Lettermans live about a block from the pool. For years, they say, their sons have walked or ridden their bicycles to the pool. According to Kay Letterman, they won't be doing that in the future.
Raleigh Police Sgt. Charles Bryant says even thought Mashburn has no prior record as a sex offender, it's possible he could be involved in other cases.
Mashburn is a Raleigh resident. He is married and has a 2-year-old child.
