Teen Sentenced in Connection with 1995 Murder
Posted July 8, 1997
DURHAM — An accomplice in the kidnapping and murder of a Wilmington honor student will spend the next nine years behind bars.
Melanie Gray says she took part in the 1995 beating death of Danny Pence. Her sentence is part of a plea agreement.
During the sentencing hearing, Gray's attorney talked to the judge about giving her a second chance. The victim's mother, Sharlene Pence, said her son would not get the same opportunity.
Gray was just 14 at the time of the murder. Todd Boggess, whom prosecutors say masterminded the crime, was sentenced to death earlier this year.
