Local Radio Stations Rally for NAACP Membership

RALEIGH — Some Triangle radio stations joined a national effort Saturday -- aneffort to put new lifeblood into the NAACP.

They participated in the annual "radiothon" to encourage membership andraise money for the association. Organizers of the event say they hope todouble the state's membership by the year 2000.

Portia Brandon believes there is strength in numbers. She says in orderfor the NAACP to address issues that concern African Americans as apeople, it needs more support. Brandon saysthe organization also needs money and support soit can be more effective in the things it is trying to do.

The North Carolina NAACP has 50,000 members in 116 branches. Organizershope Saturday's radiothon nets them 10,000 more people. The group isthinking about taking another approach as well -- marketing.

The new state executive says launching a public relations campaign mightbe just the boost the NAACP needs.
