RALEIGH — Raleigh police were called to the Stoney Hollow townhouse complex early Tuesday afternoon. Police say a woman walked out of her apartment at about 1 p.m. firing a handgun.
The woman, 41-year-old Denise Kerr, fired several shots, then apparently returned to the apartment. Police believe she was firing at grounds workers.
Benny Woodley of Cardinal Lawn service said some of the workers were cleaning up debris in an area near the woman's doorway when she came out yelling and shooting because of the noise their equipment was making.
Police sent a SWAT team to the complex thinking she was holding one of the grounds workers hostage in the apartment, but it turned out she was alone inside.
Neighbors say they don't recall an incident like this before, but police say the woman does have a history of mental problems.
She may be admitted to Dorothea Dix hospital where she has been a patient before.
