Man Dies in Farm Pond

Posted June 2, 1997

— The body of a man said to be a poor swimmer and a novice at fishing was found Sunday in a southern Wake County farm pond. Rigoberto Armado Melendez Lopez, 27, had disappeared Friday while fishing.

Authorities said no flotation device was found in or near his makeshift wooden boat.

Friends said he had been impressed by someone else catching a large bass in the same pond earlier in the week, and had gone to try his own luck.

Melendez had last been seen in the boat Friday afternoon, but it wasn't until late Saturday that his acquaintances realized they hadn't seen him in hours.

Emergency workers worked through most of Saturday night and Sunday morning to look for him. Teams from Wake County EMS and sheriff's department were joined by workers from Holly Springs, Apex, Garner and Fuquay-Varina.

His wife and child live in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and his body will be sent there for burial.
