Triangle Stages Memorial Day Events

RALEIGH — Although many people use the three-dayMemorial weekend as an excuse to head for the beach or mountains, they owetheir freedom to do so to the thousands of military personnel -- and othercivilians -- who made it possible. On Monday, various events are scheduledacross the Triangle to enable the public to gather in memory of those whofought the country's wars and preserved its peace.

9 a.m. - Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave.; National Guardlanding of Apache helicopter, color guard and wreath laying.

10 a.m. - Hillcrest Cemetery, off 400 block of S. Harrison Ave., Cary);American Legion, Post 67; speakers: Ret. Admiral Stephen Glass andCongressman David Price.

11 a.m. - Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 3712 Cheek Rd., Durham; speaker:CSN Walter Sams.

11 a.m. - Veterans' Memorial Park at Carolina Biblical Gardens onCreech Road; ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 157.

11:30 a.m. - Capitol Square, downtown Raleigh; Triangle Detachment ofthe Marine Corps League will stage a ceremony; Congressman David Pricewill speak.

6 p.m. - Maplewood Cemetery, 1621 Duke University Rd., Durham; ceremonysponsored by American Legion Post 7; speaker will be Vietnam War veteranLarry Stogner.

On the national level, at 3 p.m. Eastern time, Americans arebeing asked to take moment to remember our war dead.

The group No Greater Love calls it a "Nationwide Moment ofRemembrance." It will be marked by the playing of "Taps" across thecountry, followed by a moment of silence.

No Greater Love founder Carmella LaSpada says she wants to put the"memorial" back into Memorial Day. She says too often, Memorial Day isseen as just a day off work, rather than a day to remember those who gavetheir lives so the rest of us could be free.

LaSpada says baseball stadiums, race tracks, casinos, airports andretailers are among those whohave agreed to the moment of silence. And Amtrak's 200 passenger trainswill sound their horns.

In honor of the holiday, the following area locations will be closedMonday: post office; federal, state and county offices; city officesexcept Durham's, which will be open; and banks. Parks and landfills willbe open, as will most stores. Libraries will be closed.

To handle a Hurricane Fran make-up day, Chapel Hill-Carrboro publicschools will be open. Public schools in Durham, Johnston, Wake and therest of Orange County will be closed.
