WAKE FOREST — A woman who was attacked and sexually assaulted Tuesday at Falls Lake Dam is said to be in stable condition at Wake Medical Center. Deputies said her injuries were severe.
Wake County deputies say the 43-year-old female Army Corps of Engineers employee was hit in the face by her assailant, then dragged up an embankment into a wooded area. Later, she managed to get back into the parking lot where she was accosted and call to passers-by for help.
The woman was returning from a work site to get tools from her truck when she was approached by an unknown white male.
There were dozens of people at the reservoir park at the time. It is a popular area to fish, picnic and exercise. Several said they were shocked to hear what happened and had not seen or heard the attack. Jogger Vincent Nacouzi said he is concerned because many people consider it to be a safe area.
Fisherman Allen Garner said he's heard of several incidents in the park recently.
Park rangers stepped up patrols Wednesday to keep visitors safe.
