Woman Attacked at Falls Lake Reservoir Dam

WAKE FOREST — Wake County deputies have closed off thearea around Falls Lake Dam. They say a female ArmyCorps of Engineers employee was attacked and sexually assaultedthere Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was returning from a work site to get tools fromher truck when she was approached by a white male. She was transported toWake Medical Center and was said to be severely injured.

Investigators say they believe she was accosted at her van and draggedup an embankment into a wooded area where she was raped.

Captain Macks Pickett of the Wake County Sheriff's Department said thewoman was seriously injured.

There were dozens of people at the reservoir park at the time.It is a popular area to fish, picnic and exercise. Severalsaid they were shocked to hear what happened and had not seen or heard theattack. Jogger Vincent Nacouzi said he is concerned because many peopleconsider it to be a safe area.

Fisherman Allen Garner said he's heard of several incidents in the park recently.

The victim was able to drag herself back out into the open and attractsome passers-by who called 9-1-1. Deputies say they don't have a very gooddescription of the suspect yet.

Deputies brought in a search dog and used WRAL's Sky 5 helicopterin attempt to track the attacker. They are also looking for evidence,specifically a red shirt they say belongs to the victim. The park areaaround the dam covers about 250 acres.

At the time of our 11 o'clock report, the victim was listed in stablecondition at an area hospital.
