Woman Attacked at Falls Lake Reservoir Dam

Posted May 20, 1997

— Wake County deputies have closed off the area around Falls Lake Dam. They say a female Army Corps of Engineers employee was attacked and sexually assaulted there Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was returning from a work site to get tools from her truck when she was approached by a white male. She was transported to Wake Medical Center and was said to be severely injured.

Investigators say they believe she was accosted at her van and dragged up an embankment into a wooded area where she was raped.

Captain Macks Pickett of the Wake County Sheriff's Department said the woman was seriously injured.

There were dozens of people at the reservoir park at the time. It is a popular area to fish, picnic and exercise. Several said they were shocked to hear what happened and had not seen or heard the attack. Jogger Vincent Nacouzi said he is concerned because many people consider it to be a safe area.

Fisherman Allen Garner said he's heard of several incidents in the park recently.

The victim was able to drag herself back out into the open and attract some passers-by who called 9-1-1. Deputies say they don't have a very good description of the suspect yet.

Deputies brought in a search dog and used WRAL's Sky 5 helicopter in attempt to track the attacker. They are also looking for evidence, specifically a red shirt they say belongs to the victim. The park area around the dam covers about 250 acres.

At the time of our 11 o'clock report, the victim was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.
