Cumberland County Will Get New High-Rise Jail

Posted May 20, 1997

— Officials in Cumberland County have made a decision about the location of the county's new jail.

The existing jail is overcrowded and outdated and there has been much debate about where to build a new one.

Commissioners have now decided to build a high-rise jail next door to the existing one. Monday night, two commissioners made an eleventh hour pitch for a low-rise facility in the downtown area, but a majority of the board settled on the high-rise.
