Crabtree Valley Mall Sits Amid Snarled Traffic

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Glenwood Avenue near Crabtree Valley Mall hasbeen under construction for quite a while and drivers are getting prettysteamed about being stuck amongst the orange and white barrels there.

The Department of Transportation is rehabilitating two bridges thatcross Crabtree Creek. They've been working with one lane of each bridgeclosed at a time. As they complete one lane, they close down another andwork on it. In addition to creating a bottleneck as traffic merges, thathas caused some confusion as drivers try to get used to a traffic patternthat constantly changes.

The result is that, especially during rush driving times, GlenwoodAvenue becomes a parking lot at times. Scott Davis drives that stretch ofroad every day. He says something has got to change.

For businesses stuck in the middle of the construction zone, it hasbeen a long three months. Ralph Vanaken, a mechanic at a gas stationthere, says his business has been seriously affected.

Thursday, DOT engineers said the project should be finished by thefirst week in June if everything goes as planned. That places the projectahead of schedule.
