Worker Rescued from Raleigh Sewer Pipe

RALEIGH — A construction worker had a close call inRaleigh Friday night. He was trapped for 90 minutes in a sewer pipe, butwas ultimately rescued having sustained only a broken leg.

Tim Simpson, 21, was pinned in a 15-foot hole at the intersection ofSalisbury and Kindley Streets in downtown Raleigh. He had climbed downthe vertical pipe to check for leaks.

Suddenly, a metal ball that plugs a horizontal pipe broke free,breaking his left leg and trapping him.

Simpson, who works for Park Construction Co., in Morrisville, was takento an area hospital, where he was also treated for hypothermia.
