BYNUM — The Chatham County District Attorney has cleared police officers who fired at and killed a bank robbery suspect in March. The suspect and two women, one of whom drove the car, led police, deputies and state troopers on a high-speed chase for 22 miles, from North Raleigh, onto the Interstate-440 Beltline, and onto U.S. 1 into Chatham County.
When the suspects' vehicle ran off the road, Robert Downey, Jr. appeared in the back seat and pointed a gun at police. A Raleigh police officer, a trooper and a Wake County deputy opened fire, hitting Downey seven times.
