Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation in Sanford

SANFORD — A natural gas line rupture Friday morning prompted authorities to evacuate a six-block area in the heart of this Lee County town.
The line was ruptured about 10 a.m. by utility crews. Homes and businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution until the fumes dissipated, lessening the threat of explosion or fire.
Authorities told WRAL'sBrian Bowmanthat residents and business owners would be allowed to return about 1 p.m.
