RALEIGH — Don't want nuclear waste passing through yourneighborhood? Well, it could happen soon. That's why environmentalistscarried a mock-nuclear waste cask to the legislative building Thursday towarn people of that possibility.
A convoy carrying the real thing will travel through North Carolinasometime next week. The waste is being sent to a South Carolina facilityfrom a decommissioned nuclear plant in Massachusetts.
Activists say the highway shipments pose a threat to the public, butthe manufacturer says the casks have undergone major crash tests and haveyet to spring a leak.
