Environmentalists Protest Nuclear Waste

RALEIGH — Don't want nuclear waste passing through your neighborhood? Well, it could happen soon. That's why environmentalists carried a mock-nuclear waste cask to the legislative building Thursday to warn people of that possibility.
A convoy carrying the real thing will travel through North Carolina sometime next week. The waste is being sent to a South Carolina facility from a decommissioned nuclear plant in Massachusetts.
Activists say the highway shipments pose a threat to the public, but the manufacturer says the casks have undergone major crash tests and have yet to spring a leak.
