RALEIGH — A man hired to work with the Athens Drive HighSchool band has been arrested and charged with the statutory rape of a15-year-old student. People are asking how it could have happened.
Athens Drive Principal Walt Sherlin says Daimon Lorenzo King waswell-known inthe area for his work with bands over the past 10 years. He says theschool did a background check on King and the report was clean.
King was hired, not by the school with state money, but by bandboosters with money they had raised.
Sherlin adds that he thinks this was an isolated incident, but schoolofficials have decided to take another look at how such consultants arehired.
