Enloe Band Consultant Charged with Statutory Rape

RALEIGH — A man hired to work with the Athens Drive High School band has been arrested and charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old student. People are asking how it could have happened.
Athens Drive Principal Walt Sherlin says Daimon Lorenzo King was well-known in the area for his work with bands over the past 10 years. He says the school did a background check on King and the report was clean.
King was hired, not by the school with state money, but by band boosters with money they had raised.
Sherlin adds that he thinks this was an isolated incident, but school officials have decided to take another look at how such consultants are hired.
