Hail, Severe Storms Move Through Triangle

— Hail pounded on rooftops across the Triangle and points east Monday night as a line of severe thunderstorms swept across the area.

No significant damage was reported, but the hail was widespread. Hail one inch in diameter began falling in Alamance and Chatham counties before 10 p.m. In Wake County, hail reports ranged in diameter from .75 inches in Cary to 1.75 inches in New Hill. Hail also was reported in the Durham, Johnston, Craven, Duplin, Bladen, Pender and Jones counties.

At WRAL, .69 inches of rain fell overnight, with the heaviest rains falling about 3 a.m.

More heavy rain is likely starting tonight and continuing into Wednesday, but the storms are not expected to be as severe as those that moved through the area late Monday and early Tuesday.
