Warning Issued for UNC-CH Campus

CHAPEL HILL — Police say students and staffneed to stay on alert following two attacks on the campus of UNC-ChapelHill.

Police say a little after 8 p.m. last night, a doctor was locking her office door at the Burnett-Womack building near UNCHospitals when she was approached from behind by a man. She screamed andthe man fled.

Just a few minutes later, a student was grabbed near the School ofNursing by a man matching the description of the first suspect.

UNC police Lt. Angela Carmen says the man tried tosexually assault the student, but she got away.

Neither woman was seriously injured, but students are concerned. AmyPoindexter says there are many activitiesscheduled at night and the thought of being attacked is frightening.

Investigators believe the same person is responsible for both attacks.He is described as a black male, between 5'10" and 6'2" tall. He may bein his early to mid-30s. He has a medium complexion, slim build and shorthair. The suspect was last seen wearing dark clothing.

UNC Police are posting flyers across campus to warn students, and to try to get answers. They offer several suggestions to those who must beout on campus at night.

  • Don't walk alone if you can possibly help it.
  • Always try to park near a street light.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, including noticing anyone walkingbehind or across the street from you.
  • If you must go out alone, call a cab or ask a security personto escort you.
