Raleigh Unveils New Civil Rites Shrine

RALEIGH — A 12-ton granite shrine that honors arearesidents who worked for civil rights will be unveiled in Raleigh today.

The monument bears the names of 25 people who furthered the cause orwere positive examples to others.

Among them are former mayor Avery Upchurch and Rev. John Chavis, forwhom Chavis Park and Chavis Heights were named.

The unveiling will be held at 4 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Gardens,at the intersection of King Boulevard and Rock Quarry Road.
