<b>SANFORD</b> — A woman and her boyfriend face murder chargesin the beating death of the woman's 4-month-old son.  Policeconfirm that Department of Social Services workers had investigated thehome recently and had discovered abuse, but returned the child to hismother.

Now police have arrested 21-year-old Veronica Cerra Reyes and23-year-oldJuan Daniel Delgado. They have been charged withsecond-degree murder in the death of Reyes' baby, Rolondo EnriqueReyes.

The suspects are being held in the Lee County jail withoutbond.

Police Captain Marty Cole said the baby died Tuesday of severebrain damage at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He said the childhad been in the intensive care unit since Sunday.

Cole said the fatal injuries appear to have been inflicted overthe weekend.

Authorities say the couple is also being questioned about possibleabuse of the baby's 2-year-old sibling.
