SANFORD — A woman and her boyfriend face murder charges in the beating death of the woman's 4-month-old son. Police confirm that Department of Social Services workers had investigated the home recently and had discovered abuse, but returned the child to his mother.
Now police have arrested 21-year-old Veronica Cerra Reyes and 23-year-old Juan Daniel Delgado. They have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Reyes' baby, Rolondo Enrique Reyes.
The suspects are being held in the Lee County jail without bond.
Police Captain Marty Cole said the baby died Tuesday of severe brain damage at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He said the child had been in the intensive care unit since Sunday.
Cole said the fatal injuries appear to have been inflicted over the weekend.
Authorities say the couple is also being questioned about possible abuse of the baby's 2-year-old sibling.
