Blasting Cap Successfully Removed

A Chapel Hill soccer field is ready for games as usual today, after a live blasting cap found in a nearby portable toilet was successfully removed Saturday afternoon.

Police called a halt to the games of the Rainbow Soccer League and evacuated the field, which is on UNC property. A child had reported the cap's presence in the toilet.

A State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad worked with UNC-CH police and campus security on handling the device. It could have been detonated by static electricity or an electronic signal.

The caps are often used to blow up large rocks at construction sites. The investigation continues, and anyone with information on who put the cap in the toilet is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 942-7155.

The field is situated between Cleland Drive and Flemington Road, off US 15-501.

Authorities also suggest that anyone using public facilities be cautious when using them.
