Preparing for the manhunt

Law enforcement officers in Duplin County have an intensive manhunt under way. They are looking for a motorist who shot an officer Thursday evening following a high-speed chase.

Police had been operating a roadblock for drug checks, when a Bronco veered around the checkpoint.

Officers pursued the vehicle on U.S. 117. The Bronco crashed on N.C. 903, whereu the driver jumped out and ran. He then fired at officers, hitting Kenansville police officer Wade Feimster in the abdomen, and disappeared into nearby woods. Feimster underwent surgery at Duplin County General Hospital. He was listed in stable condition Friday morning.

A Highway Patrol helicopter with infrared equipment searched the area around Magnolia from the air while officers searched on foot.

The unusual commotion disturbed the normal calm of tiny Magnolia, drawing residents from their homes to find out what was happening. They were told to go back indoors, that the situation was dangerous.
