DURHAM — Todd Boggess has been sentenced todeath for beating to death a Wilmington teenager.

Sharlene Pence, mother of the victim, has been in court throughout thetrial and sentencing. She says there is, finally, a sense of closure forher.

Boggess was convicted by the same jury March 10 of first-degreemurder, robbery and kidnapping in the death of 17-year-old Daniel LeePence of Wilmington.

Defense attorneys tried to spare Boggess saying that he wassexually abused as a child, had drug and alcohol problems and waschronically depressed. They said he was mentally incapable ofpremeditated murder.

But District Attorney Jim Hardin Jr. said Boggess knew exactlywhat he was doing when he killed Pence. Pence waskidnapped at Wrightsville Beach on August 22, 1995, and hisbattered body was found in northern Durham County.

As the verdict was read, Boggess looked straight ahead, showing noemotion.
