Cumberland County accident scene.
Cumberland County accident scene.

There were seven traffic deaths on North Carolina roads this past weekend.

One was in Cumberland County where police say a driver was speeding on Highway 301 when he apparently lost control of his car and smashed into a tree. Elsie Stokes, a 50-year-old passenger in the car, died in that accident. The driver, Robert Ramsey, remained hospitalized Monday.

So far this year, there have been 228 traffic-related deaths in the state. That's down from 256 this time last year.
