As Killer Goes to Prison, Victims are Remembered

FAYETTEVILLE — James Burmeister may be in prison convicted of a double murder, but for the families of his victims that fact ends only of one chapter in their tragedy.
Friday, family members laid flowers and wreaths at the spot where Michael James and Jackie Burden were slain two years ago. Nancy James, widow of one of the victims, says Friday was a difficult day, but only one of many.
There is still another trial to come. Malcolm Wright is also accused in these crimes and will be tried later this month in Wilmington. And Randy Meadows, who pleaded guilty to driving the killers' car in exchange for his testimony, will be sentenced after that.
Victims' families plan to be present for both events.
