RALEIGH — North Carolina's rabies epidemic continues to spread, and seems to be gaining speed. The disease has now spread to 59 of the state's 100 counties, and state agencies say they are struggling to keep pace.
The epidemic started about six years ago. Officials say they expect about 1,500 new cases to be reported this year. Only nine cases were reported in NC the year before the epidemic broke out.
