<b>RALEIGH</b> — A legal battle over advertisements placed intheNews & Observerby Sheriff John Baker has been settled.

In June, 1996, Sheriff Baker placed ads to tell the public he neededmore deputies. Wake County Commissioners thought the ads inappropriate andrefused to pay for them. The newspaper sued.

County commissioners are now agreeing to pay more than $7,600 to thepaper.
