WELDON — Amtrak's Carolinian train traveling southbound from New York collided with an automobile in Halifax County Tuesday afternoon, killing the driver of the car.
The accident occurred where the tracks cross a road. The Carolinian slammed into the car at the intersection, cutting the car in half. The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene, but Amtrak officials said there were no injuries on the train.
Authorities say the victim was 21-year-old Tomeka Lynnette Clanton who was on her way to work. Witnesses said she drove past three cars stopped at the train crossing before she drove around the down crossing gate.
The train was delayed about an hour and a half before making stops at Rocky Mount and Wilson.
