RALEIGH — Law officers are investigating the death of a man who had been reported missing November 11. His body was found Friday off Ebenezer Church Road in northwestern Wake County.
The man's identity has not been released. A wallet was found at the scene and it helped identify the man.
Because the original missing person's report said the man had been shot and kidnapped from Durham, the matter is the city's 43rd murder of 1996. Durham police are investigating because there were no initial indications that the murder occurred where the body was found.
An anonymous typewritten letter led Wake County deputies to the site. The writer said the body was found during a walk in the woods on Sunday. The letter was postmarked from Charlotte. Authorities are not sure how long the body had been in the woods.
