Posted July 18, 2007

— Tuesday's storm had an impact on the Wednesday morning commute.

The storm knocked out several traffic lights in parts of downtown Raleigh and surrounding areas.

So the storm knocked out power in downtown Raleigh. What about the house that was struck by lightning and burned to the ground? Lash Avenue ... family was on vacation, thank goodness.

When in doubt, say a quick prayer and just gun it. Isn't that the best way?

ral7704 - you're right. I looked it up. and no, it wasn't me in front of you because that person didn't honk. what i DID see was people blowing through the flashing yellow lights without slowing - nothing cautious about their approach to the intersection. I actually heard the police request this morning on the news that people treat the intersections as 4-way stops.

nativencgirl, you must have been the one I was sitting behind at the flashing yellow. Flashing RED means stop. Flashing YELLOW means cautiously go through because the intersecting road has a flashing RED and THEY have to wait for traffic to clear before they can go. If the lights are all OUT, then it's a four-way stop.

actually, flashing yellow DOES mean stop at the intersection. You're supposed to treat intersections with flashing lights or non-working lights as 4-way stops. What flashing yellow does not mean is blowing through at speed.

Now traffic will probably move better.

  • ral7704 Jul 18, 2007

...and lots of others are flashing red or flashing yellow. Flashing yellow doesn't mean stop and wave those waiting at the flashing red out into the intersection when the three other lanes of traffic are cautiously going through the flashing yellow. Green also doesn't mean stop. Saw both happen on several occasions this morning - that was me behind you blowing the horn. WAKE UP!
