Two Small Planes Down
Posted December 28, 1996
ROXBORO — About 10 a.m. Saturday, reports from Person and Wayne Counties indicated that small private planes had crashed in each county, possibly within minutes of each other.
The Person County crash is reported in the Timberlake area, off Tom Oakley Road. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that two people died in that accident.
The other crash occurred near Seymour Johnson Air Force Base outside Goldsboro. That accident site was identified as Highway 111 South, off Colonial Avenue. Reports now indicate the plane had been running out of fuel and the pilot was trying to land at the base, but crashed before he reached it. It's believed the pilot died in the accident. There has been no word yet whether there were passengers on board.
