Woman Injured in Fayetteville House Fire

FAYETTEVILLE — An elderly Fayetteville woman remainsin critical condition Friday after being pulled from her burning home aday earlier.

Firefighters managed to pull 89-year-old Mattie Leak out of her houseon Ames Street. Leak is legally blind. Her husband, Whitfield, also in his80s, escaped withoutinjury.

More than 25 percent of Leak's body wasburned in the blaze, and she inhaleda lot of smoke, authorities said.

Leak was taken to Cape Fear ValleyMedical Center, then flown to the burncenter at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where she was listed in criticalcondition Friday.

Investigators believe the fire beganwhen clothes drying over a wood stoveignited. There was no sign of a smoke detector in the home.
