Many Workers Jobless for the Holidays
Posted December 20, 1996
Undated — The holidays are supposed to be a time of good will and generosity, but more than 1,000 employees in North Carolina will find themselves without jobs before the beginning of the new year.
Companies such as Ligget, Singer Furniture, Seimen's Energy and the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan are laying off some of their workers.
Labor officials say it's not unusual for companies to trip their work forces as Christmas approaches because, for many, it's the end of the fiscal year when new budget plans are created.
