Pizza Hut Workers Foil Would-Be Robber

RALEIGH — Workers at a Raleigh Pizza Hut turned thetables on a suspected armed robber early Tuesday morning.

Police say Angelic Hite, the restaurant manager, and her husbandMarty were leaving thePizza Hut on Creedmoor Road at about 2 a.m. when a gunman approached them.The Marty Hite was carrying a gun and police say he pulled it outand fired three shots, hitting the suspect twice.

Vernon Ray Jones was carrying a stolen .45 caliber handgun. Marty Hite had a .38. Jones is charged with armed robbery andpossession of a stolen weapon.

Jones received wounds to the chest and stomach and was taken to Wake Medical Center for surgery.

Raleigh Police Lt. T.W. Gardner says the shooting appears to have beenin self-defense.

An assistant manager was in the parking lot at the time of theshooting. She was unhurt.
