UNC-CH Courses Set for Web

CHAPEL HILL — Being late for class won't be a problemfor students in four courses at the University of Carolina this spring.They can use their own computers to take the courses on the World WideWeb.

Available through the Division of Continuing Education, the classeswill be UNC-CH's first undergraduate courses to be offered completely online. The four are: "Introduction to African Civilization,""The WorldSince 1945""Introduction to Urbanism and Planning," and "General Physics."Each course carries three credit hours. To enroll, students must haveInternet access and an e-mail account.

Professors and students will communicate by e-mail. Students caninteract with classmates through on line "discussion" groups. Thecourse's homepage will outline assignments and texts, and provideinformation about how to proceed with instruction.

"The technology behind distance learning, as demonstrated in thesepilot classes, can reach students who otherwise might not be able to comephysically to Chapel Hill and take advantage of a Carolina education,"said Chancellor Michael Hooker.

Correspondence courses have been a fixture at college campuses fordecades; UNC-CH continues to serve 3,000 off-site students each year bythat means.

The on line courses are limited to 15 students. Enrollment begins inmid-December and runs through Jan. 15, 1997. Fee is $225 per course, anddoes not include textbooks or Internet access service. For moreinformation call 800-862-5669 or 919-962-1134, or fax to 919-962-5549.
